Miracle Dog Survives Fall
A heartless Brooklyn teen was busted today for cruelly tossing a 1-year-old pooch off a six-story housing project roof -- a fall the dog miraculously survived after shattering all of its legs and suffering internal injuries, authorities said.
Fabian Henderson, 19, allegedly grabbed the defenseless female, black and white terrier mix and savagely hurled her from the roof of a building in the Red Hook Houses on June 18, said Assistant Director Joe Pentangelo of the ASPCA.
"This was unquestionably an act of cruelty," he said.
Several people called 911 to report a dog had gone off the roof and police found the shattered pup on the ground six floors below, clinging to life.
All four of the dog's limbs had to be surgically repaired with plates and screws. She also suffered internal bruising and damage to her lungs, but is expected to survive. Investigators have nicknamed her Oreo for her black-and-white markings.
"She is healing, but it is a long road ahead," Pantangelo said.
It is unclear who the dog belongs to as Henderson family said it did not belong to them.
ASPCA Special Agent Peter Rivas worked for two weeks conducting interviews before Henderson was arrested. The teen did not comment to reporters when he was brought in to the 76th Precinct to face charges of animal cruelty and reckless endangerment.
Henderson - who has a prior robbery arrest -- claimed that the dog jumped off the roof, sources said, but investigators were dubious because a large ledge on the building made it unlikely the dog could have just fallen.
The teen's family was stunned, pointing to their own dog, Diamond, saying Henderson "loved animals."
"I can't believe it. My son wouldn't do anything like that," said his 41-year-old mother Samantha Henderson. "He is around the dog all the time and he has shown no signs of abuse with the dog or any family member."
She said her son only stayed at home a few nights a week and spent the rest of his time with friends.
Henderson's girlfriend, Laniya Walker, 16, said she was with him the day of the incident, and said she never saw a dog.
"It was raining that day. We weren't even outside. I never saw the dog," she said. "He couldn't have done it."
A HEARTLESS IDIOT IS MORE LIKE IT!
Update:
The dog that amazingly survived being flung off the roof of a six-story Brooklyn housing project may owe her life to the building's air conditioners, law-enforcement sources revealed yesterday.
Oreo, a 1-year-old terrier mix, repeatedly struck the window units during her terrifying, 100- foot plunge on June 18 at the Red Hook Houses.
The series of collisions slowed her descent and, animal-welfare people believe, saved her life. Her front legs were shattered and she suffered internal injuries -- but she's expected to recover.
The creep who allegedly tossed her off the roof, Fabian Henderson, 19, was arrested Friday. Yesterday, he pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges of animal cruelty, reckless endangerment and criminal trespass.
The complaint against Henderson also notes that Oreo's skin was infected around her stomach and armpits, suggesting he mistreated her before tossing off the roof.
He was being held last night on $50,000 bail.
