R.I.P. TAZ

Taz, the last active duty member of the NYPD K-9 unit to have worked at Ground Zero after 9/11, has died of cardiac arrest. "He was the best partner I ever had," heartbroken Officer Scott Ryan said of the nine-year-old German shepherd he worked with for almost a decade.

Taz and Ryan worked 12-hour days at Ground Zero after Sept. 11, 2001, performing rescue and recovery."All the dogs - they all knew what we wanted them to do and they did it," Ryan said.

Taz, named for the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character, was also a beloved member of Ryan's family. "He was easygoing," Ryan recalled. "We liked to have fun, but when it came to work, we did what we had to do."

While many other dogs that worked 9/11 recovery died or retired, Taz stayed on the job up until he died Sunday. The strong, 90-pound pooch started losing weight in early Septembe, bounced and then fell sick again a few weeks ago. Doctors speculated he had lymphoma but cardiac arrest claimed him before he could have surgery. Ryan couldn't say whether Taz's death was 9/11-related.

"He was faithful," Ryan said of his partner. "We had the utmost trust in each other."

Maggie Welcomes Khadafy

A politically incorrect pooch delivered a stream of consciousness protest Saturday as Libyan officials rolled out the red carpet for dictator Moammar Khadafy.

Maggie the dog was out for a walk when she responded to the pomp by taking a pee on the lush rug outside the Libyan Mission - a gesture appreciated by many New Yorkers with little use for the notorious colonel.

"The dog had excellent taste," said Mark Birnbaum, 57, a Mission neighbor who watched the whole thing. "She's a sweetheart."

Aggravated Libyan officials were forced to cut away a section of the carpet that stretched across the E. 48th St. sidewalk from the curbs to the steps.

Sad but True....

('We believe in sterilizing, not euthanizing,' says Jennifer Panton of United Action for Animals. Group is setting up free neutering 'MASH-style' clinic for pit bulls like Anthony).

THE CITY'S TOUGH economy continues to leave many cash-strapped New Yorkers struggling to care for their pets. Thousands of stray and unwanted cats and dogs are being abandoned at shelters because their owners can't afford to take care of them.

Bertie swallowed nine golf balls

A typical walk with owners Mark and Michelle Jewell turned into a narrow escape from death for Bertie, a pointer cross breed, in northeast England.

From being playful and perky to looking rather ill, the Jewell family realized Bertie was in trouble and rushed him to the Clarendon House Veterinary Surgery center in County Essex, England. A quick physical exam by Dr. John Matthews showed startling abnormalities in his abdomen and X-rays were ordered as Bertie was admitted.

Astonishingly, Bertie had swallowed nine golf balls.

“We were absolutely flabbergasted when we saw Bertie’s X-ray," said veterinarian Emily Nittingale. "His stomach could have easily ruptured from the pressure of the golf balls, which could have been fatal."

Nittingale assisted Matthews in the emergency surgery, which not only removed the nine golf balls, but also a bullet from the fat around Bertie's stomach.

The Jewels were shocked to learn that Berti had been shot at some point in his life.

"He had no wounds from the gun shot injury so we suspect he had been shot a long time ago and no there is no chance he could have swallowed the bullet as it was outside the stomach," Nittingale explained in a reply e-mail to ZT Pet News. "And the fact that the bullet miraculously missed his vital internal organs proves just how lucky this brave little chappie has been.”

Since his July 27 surgery, Bertie has been at home recovering and waiting to have his stitches removed. Relieved that Bertie has made such great progress in healing, the family dog will soon be getting the all-clear from the vets.

DAISY MISSING

The chances of Jessica Simpson finding her 5-year-old maltipoo, Daisy, after it was snatched by a coyote Monday night are slim. But the singer doesn't care.

"Still holding out hope despite the a--holes that say is it a dumb thing to do," the singer wrote on Twitter.

The caramel-colored pooch, who was frequently pictured by Simpson's side, was a gift from ex-husband Nick Lachey.

"Daisy is my baby...why would I stop searching? I'm a mom," she said.
