Scruffy little dogs are wonderful. Many years ago, when I was a boy, a dog like this wandered into my grandparents' life. She was a ratty-looking little thing, and it had been decades since Granny and Pop Pop had last had a dog (not since my Dad was a boy), so they weren't interested in keeping her. My Granny tried to shoo her out of their yard, but she stuck around. And eventually my Granny fed her. Then she was allowed to move into the little storage room on the side of the house. Then Granny bathed her, and Granny and Pop took her to a vet to have her checked out. All this dogs needs is a good home, the doctor said. My sister named her Sweet Pea, and she was the sweetest, most delightful little dog who kept my grandparents young for many years.
